Havaianas Shares a Thousand Smiles

What makes your kids smile?

Chances are, the answer to this question doesn't involve the latest gadgets or vacations in far-away, exotic places. More often than not, it is the simple things in life that puts a smile on their faces: a happy Sunday morning breakfast, a hug from mom and dad or even the feel of fine sand under their feet at the beach.

Smiles are the truest expression of happiness. To commemorate Smile Month this October, Havaianas, the world’s favorite flip-flops, is launching the “Design a Smile” campaign to spread cheer and share thousands of smiles with Filipino children. Havaianas is creating a venue for children to heal the broken smiles of other children who have cleft lip and cleft palate deformities.

A series of design contests from October 16 to November 14, “Design a Smile” will give children the chance to show the world their artistic talents and, at the same time, create better futures for the children of Operation Smile, a non-profit, volunteer medical organization that provides reconstructive surgery and healthcare to kids with facial deformities.

Children from 5 to 12 years of age can participate in "Design a Smile" to lend their creativity for a greater cause. All they have to do is come to any of the events, which will be held in major malls nationwide, and design the sole of a Havaianas pair based on the theme, "What makes you smile?" Prizes from Havaianas, My Masterpiece Movement, Polaroid, Faber-Castell, KidsSports, and Orange Juice await the winners.

The top winning entry will be produced by Havaianas in a future collection and will be sold nationwide for the benefit of Operation Smile.

So, this October, let your kids share their creativity and help heal the smiles of their fellow children.

September 9, 2010. It was a sunny Thursday and for those who don't know me, FYI I rarely go out when the sun is still up (am a vampire, sssshhhh)! haha. I was invited to a seminar about choosing the Right PC! The topic instantly made me interested because my lappy(Laptop) and I are like bestfriends! But a busy person like me ,I often open multiple applications from Photoshop to MS office applications and not to mention blogger.com, social networking sites and my recent game installation StarCraft 2 all at the same time. And most of the times waiting can be frustrating!

I definitely am a Gadgeteer and I need a processor that would cope up with my busy lifestyle! As a photographer/Newspaper & Magazine writer/businessman/blogger I need a processor that gives me the capacity to multitask at top speed and allow me to run multiple application without freezing and I think i5 can do the job for me! Well I better save up now so when Intel i5 is available on Laptops I'd be able to grab one! The talk also cleared out some myths about PCs. Like for Photoshop users, you don't need a video card for that since you'd not be dealing on videos, but instead invest on the good processor!

NOTE: This is part of an Article published over Cebu Daily News last September 5, 2010. Below is my part of the interview with young entrepreneur Jandrick Climaco.

With talent and charisma on his pocket, 25 year old Jandrick “Jumbo” Bernaldez Climaco had gotten Filipino soles prancing with his hip and young shoe creation, Fushu! Jumbo graduated Graphic Arts at 1^st Academy of Graphic Arts in Makati, but his innate creativity he inherited from his fashion designer mom, Joy Bernaldez. As most of the youth his age would go clubbing and drinking, his vigor to succeed is what sets him apart his generation. In the cutthroat cosmos of fashion, he made sure that he gives his customers what they want and what they need when it comes to shoe business; stylish, comfortable, simple and quality shoes!

How long did it take for you to plan out your shoe business?
It took me one year of planning and searching for the style and quality before I started out my business.

Why shoe designing? Who influenced or inspired you to do shoe designing?
I never really thought about the business as a shoe designing job. I just wanted to sell easy shoes. I happened to know what I want and had an idea of how to go about it -- from the look, style, comfort, print, etc.

Why did you name it Fushu? What does Fushu mean?
Fushu means kung-fu shoes or funky shoes. if you notice, it is an upgraded style of the comfortable kung fu shoes but a lot sleeker and funkier.

Did you go on a formal training in shoe designing?
I never had formal training in shoe designing or shoe making. But I had help from the people already in the industry.

What’s next for Fushu? Any new and upcoming lines?
All that is still in the drawing board. we recently came out with smaller sizes for ladies after there was a lot of clamor from the girlfriends of our male clients. But the ladies prints mostly follow the men's prints.

What do you think makes Fushu stand among other shoe brands? What’s Fushu’s edge?
Fushu’s edge is it being within the budget and stylishly easy at the same time.

What’s your favorite Fushu pair and why?
The blue and teal Fushu stripes, the red... But it depends on what i am wearing. they are actually designed to match one's outfits. Now we don't have to limit ourselves to just basic and neutral colors. we can step out of the house with vibrant stripes.

How do you feel when you’re walking around the mall and seeing people wearing your Fushu shoes?
I feel really good watching people wear them. One time i was in a store at the mall with a friend and someone came up to me to ask where I got my shoes. A lot of our customers have also had the same experience. They were stalked and stopped. It feels really good when people like what you’re doing.

What’s the biggest challenge you encountered during the planning and executing of your shoe business?
In the beginning, it was achieving the shoe form. recently it's the production. since it is made locally, we are affected by the limited resources. but we are promptly solving that area.

What do you do on your spare time? What’s your idea of fun? Hobbies?
I hang out with friends when there are events but i haven't been out much lately. once in a while, it's just coffee or lunch with one or two friends. I'm actually a bit of a geek. I can stay home and watch anime the whole Sunday or play Starcraft2 with my friends or my brother overseas.

Sarah Geronimo had gone a long way! She just did world tour concert including Canda and the US and is now completing her Philippine tour. When she visited Cebu, I had a chance to interview her at the airport and after the concert. So read on and know Sarah G. a bit more!

How many costume change did you have on your Record Breaker Concert in Cebu? Who are the designers involved?
Sa Cebu’s Record Breaker Concert, probably mga 4 costume changes. Some designers involved sa wardrobe ko are Rajo Laurel and Rhett Eala.

How did you celebrate your birthday?
Nasa bahay lang ako the whole day. My family and I shared a quiet. All the gifts I received are special and I would like to thank all my friends and family for loving me and supporting me always, both sa career and my personal life.

How involved are you now in the decision making of your projects?
“Yes. Mas involved na po ako sa mga projects na ginagawa ko. I talk to my manager if may concerns ako. Kapag may hesitations ako about a project, vino-voice out ko na.

What are the things you miss?
“Gusto ko sana magbakasyon. Yung maka-bonding ko yung friends ko sa high school at mga kapatid ko at mag-camping.”The last time ako nagbakasyon is when nagtour kami sa U.S., for a week. Sobra namimiss ko mga friends ko sa highschool. Namimiss ko syempre yung hangouts, kulitan, tawanan. Last time ko nakita highschool friends ko last year pa, but I saw two of my highschool friends sa premier ng Hating Kapatid but wala kaming chance makapagusap dahil maraming tao.

What are your favorite Cebuano foods/delicacies?
I love danggit! And Uo yung spicy Cebu Lechon! Nilibre ako ni Kuya Luis (Manzano).

How do you feel that Matteo Guidacelli admitted his admiration for you?
Haha! No comment na lang. Sabi ko nga, wala namang masamang mag-admire kasi ako rin naman hinahangaan ko din si Matteo dahil gwapo at magaling na car racer. So wala naman sigurong masama dun.

What’s your message to the Cebuanos?
Sana nanood at nagenjoy yung mga Cebuanos sa Record Breaker Concert ko sa Waterfront together with Charlie Green, Erick Santos, Jimmy Marquez and the G-force dancers. At sana din nanuod din sila ng movie ko with Ate Judee Ann na Hating Kapatid. Nagpapasalamt din ako sa support ng lahat ng Cebuano fans.

What are the other legs of your tour?
Record Breaker Concert will also be at Island Cove, Cavite on August 20 and the Arellano Coliseum in Cabanatuan on August 27. My other shows will be on September 3 at Ormoc; September 17 at Lipa, Batangas; September 13 at Zamboanga City; October 1 in Bataan and October 8 in Bacolod.

Race to Reduce Challenge 2010 is a fund raiser for Aboitiz Foundation to support their projects like help raise environmental awareness and saving street children. Born to proud parents English dad Roger Green and Cebuana mom Cecilia Sumargo, Charlie Green is back retracing his Cebuano roots! Charlie Green serenaded his fellow Cebuanos, national and international guests in his two part performance wowing a jam-packed Waterfront Ballroom as special guest to Philippine Pop Princess Sarah Geronimo and melting the hearts of Ayala Center Cebu mall goers the next day. The 13 year old singing sensation who got a big break after appearing in 2008 on UK’s biggest reality talent show “Britain’s Got Talent” had been touring the world together with Sarah Geronimo, Erick Santos and Jimmy Marquez, winning the hearts of fans around the globe with his standard and jazz ballads. Let’s get to know more our kababayan, Charlie Sumargo Green !

At a young age of 10 (going to 11), how did you handle the pressure on the reality show “

Britain

’s Got Talent”?

I wouldn’t say it was pressure; I got to say it’s on how I handled my nerves. Appearing in England’s biggest show is a big thing and it was the only time I got so nervous because of the judges and Simon Cowell. It was on “British Got Talent” that I got the feel of being so nervous because when I was younger when I perform, I don’t get so nervous.

What was your role in the movie “Waiting in Rhyme” and tell us about the experience?

I played a British schoolboy in ‘Waiting in Rhyme.” It was cool because I get to play the beatbox and did my performance in rap. It may sound easy but I could do a lot more! It was 2008 and it was my debut in acting. It was a great experience because the whole dialogue consisted of poems and made in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Would love to pursue a career in acting and probably would also concentrate on that in a couple of years.

You had a song to raised funds and awareness on Muscular Dystrophy is it still on going? Any charitable works that your currently involved in?

Way back in 2007, “Hands Around the World” was produced for me to raise funds and awareness on muscular Dystrophy. My friend has muscle dystrophy that’s why I decided to help. Gladly it topped the iTunes chart during the holidays(2007). “Hand’s Around Me” is also featured on my Debut album “Charlie Green”. The project was only for that period of time and am happy I was able to help. I always keep myself involved in charity projects. I just did an orphanage visit for UNTV a few weeks ago. I took a lot of pinches that day (lauging)!

Are you used to people kissing and pinching you on the cheeks?

My first time I got a pinched on my face, I asked my mom why are they doing that. In England it ain’t normal to pinch someone else’s cheeks, it’s strange! But yeah, eventually I got used to people kissing me, hugging me and pinching my cheeks.

When did you started singing?

I love singing. Believe it or not, my first public performance was in a cruise ship when I was 2 years old where I sang “New York, New York!”

What do you wish to have back home in

England

that is in

Philippines

and vice versa?

I would say that I wish in England we have more sunny weather. At the moment in England it’s like 20degrees and here in Cebu, too much sun. In England it’s too cold in Cebu it’s too hot. I also wish we have less traffic in the Philippines. And in England, I wish for more malls, in the Philippines there’s like malls everywhere. Philippines also have more TV shows showcasing talents, like every Sunday we have ASAP and Party Pilipinas, but in England there’s only a few shows like that.

You won 3 “AWIT awards” last January 2010, what where those awards?

I won “Best Performance by a New Male Artist” and “Best Performance by a Child Artiste” for my performance of “Summer Wind” on Britain’s Got Talent and also won the “Best Jazz Recording Award” for my performance of “Mama Said So” by Richard Poon. I wasn’t able to come to the awarding ceremony though and sadly I haven’t gotten the awards yet.

How did you get to love standard music and how do you feel people tagging you as an old soul?

I always love classic and standard music. Though people think I only like standard songs, but I do love and listen to all types of music. I am happy I help people appreciate standard songs. My dad greatly helps and inspires me in my career. I used to watch him on TV when he is away performing standard songs and in my own way, I am glad I help bring back standard songs a little bit more.

Any artist you look up to and inspire you to sing?

I always look up to Michael Jackson and Michael Bubble! I love all kinds of music though because music excites me! From Beyonce to the Queen, they’re all great and inspire me in different ways. I also appreciate songs by Justin Beiber and other pop nad R&B artists and looking forward to do a song from the Pop or R &B genre in the future. My dad of course was a big inspiration to me. His performances influenced me which motivated me to be just like my dad. I love watching my dad on the television.

What do you do with the money you earn?

I basically put them in the bank. I am not a spoiled kid and I do not spend much. I only spend what on what we need. And of course help my family with the money I earn.

Do you understand the Tagalog songs you sing?

Yes I do. I have my coach translate it to English first so I would be able to understand it and put my feelings in to the song. My first single on my latest album is in Tagalog entitled “Pers Lab(First Love)”! I could relate to the song somehow.

What’s your favorite family activity?

I love bowling! And nowadays, families don’t get together and eat together that often, because kids just grab food and go to the XBOX or something. So I love eating with my family and is my favorite family activity, and probably that’s the Filipino trait I got from my mom. I have a half sister (from his mom’s side) who lives in the Philippines and a half brother (from his dad’s side) who travels around. Though I don’t get to see them that much but when we do, we try to catch up with what’s new.

What do you do on your spare time?

I love sports. I love playing soccer and cricket. I also love watching sports on TV.

You have been traveling around the world, where else do you want to travel?

I have been to the US and Canada. I find Las Vegas very interesting, if you have never been there then you should definitely go there. I also love Rome and Paris! Europe has lots of great places. I never been to many asian countries, so definitely I would love to fly to Japan, Beijing and rest of China’s cities.

What’s next after the Record Breaker World tour with Sarah Geronimo?

We still have a Cagayan de Oro and Cavite leg for the Record Breaker tour. Probably after I’d go back to England for a week or two. Then soon I would be releasing my next single for my new album, so watch out for that! And looking forward in working for my third album. A more contemporary album with more original songs and youthful arrangements.

It was a fun filled day both for the kids and their mentor photographers as they play around SM Storyland. Kids are taught on how to use the camera as they had a blast playing around SM Storyland. Photographers learned so much about these wonderful kids! An Exhibit about the program runs from July 23-30, 2010 at SM City Cebu!

Vice Ganda, who currently is one of the famous figures of the noontime program "Showtime" over ABS CBN did a show at at the Waterfront Hotel Lahug. The spectacle had mixed reaction from both the audience and Cebu Media people. The show was supposed to start at 8:30 but started an hour late. Vice Ganda also picked on a Cebuana Producer and a public figure who was drinking champagne and talking during the show, which ticked off some media people and her close friends. And also, an interview with Cebu Media was set at 4pm, then moved to 6pm and moved again after the show at around 1am.

The show was great though in spite of all the lapses. I ended up laughing until my stomach crumbled and shouted FEED ME NOW! hahaha. I had dinner at 2am! wheeew! Well my interview with Vice Ganda will come out on Cebu Daily News soon! So guys subscribe to Cebu Daily now! ;)

3 Designers, 3 DJs , 3 Dimensional! It’s all about 3D as the much awaited IMAX theater in SM City Cebu is finally here! The pre launch party was a celebration of Cebuano talents in fashion and music as three of Cebu’s paramount fashion designers Edwin Ao, Arcy Gayatin and Philip Rodriguez who collaborated for the 3D fashion show and backed with 3 propitious Cebuano Disk Jockeys Bong Suzara, Marlon Orellano and Mael Lavares!

After glazing the Asian Designers Collection for the recent Tokyo Fashion Week with his “Mutilate Collection”, Edwin Ao flaunted his chef d'oeuvre pieces to the Cebuanos. Inspired from the twisted body figures of figurative artist Egon Schieles, “Mutilate” is contrived with fabrics done in flannel wool and black and beige Thai silk.

”Blue Moon Rising” was a master work set done by Ms. Arcy Gayatin. Arcy shares that even though her designs are feminine they never are saccharine, playing around with structure and fluidity. For her structured pieces, she used lace and wire making the shoulders defined looking like armors. As for her fluid pieces, Arcy made use of used Jersey that were draped, pleated or shirred with mesh details. As always, her inspiration come from the fabrics she work on, experimenting, inventing and discovering new possibilities.

Philip Rodriguez sired “ Shadow Play” from the different movies he watched. A play of textures and finish – thin and thick, matte and shiny fabrics, snake skin and tulle. “Shadow Play” is reinventing past looks to contemporary in black and sage green colors that are very urban.

IMAX 3D Launch Party and 3D Fashion Show was organized by Cybill Gayatin and Kaye Luym of A-list Events. Fashion show was directed by Edwin Ao and technical and visuals by Mikey Sanchez. SM City Cebu IMAX Theater special screening would be on July 7, 2010 and grand launch on the 8th of July featuring James Cameron’s epic motion picture “Avatar” and will be open to the public on July 9, 2010 showing Cameron’s movie blockbuster hit for a week.

Maribago's New Seven refers to the 7 dolphins of their new resort sculpture which was unveiled by guest of honor Secretary Ace Durano.

The event was attended by media from TV, newspaper and the web. Cebu Socialites were also there to grace the event.

By invitation only event, "Reveal" was held at The Waterfront Lahug Pacific Ballroom last February 15, 2010. The Ronald Enrico Debut Fashion show was attended by media and his clients. It was also the grand launch show launch of Belle Ange Pret-a-Couture for kids.

The show was hosted by Giselle Sanchez and Tessa Prieto.

The show started past 8pm starting off with the Belle Ange collection for kids.

It was then followed by Haute Couture collection of Mr. Ronald Enrico. Hot AD Models ramped Ronald's Creations!

MS. Cebu 2010 winner wasn't the crowd's favorite but she won the hearts of the judges as she was crown the new queen of Cebu! With her outstanding stage presence and confidence she outshined crowd favorites (including my bet) Carole Monique "Blinky" de Leon (No. 8) and Rogelie "Roj" Catacutan (No. 11) who both bagged lots of special awards during the pre pageant night and the coronation night. On the Pre Pageant Roj Catacutan won the Best in Runway and Blinky won Ms. Lee Award.

Top 5 Finalists

4th Runner up went to Ms. Blinky de Leon (No. 8) won Best in Evening Gown (Gown By Cary Santiago who also won best Evening Gown Designer), Ms. Belo Starwhite Skin and Ms. Belo Body Beautiful Awards.

3rd Runner up went to Ms. Rojelie Catacutan (No. 11) who also bagged Ms. Photogenic and Ms. Friendship Awards. She wore a Dino Lloren Night Gown.

Ms. Cebu 2010 prepageant night was held at Fuente Circle to formally present the candidates to the world. 12 Cebuana beauties vying for the title of Ms. Cebu 2010. Special Awards like Ms. Lee, Ms. Marco Polo, Best in Ramp and Best in Clubwear were announced. I was one of the panel of judges side by side with Ms. Cebu 2009 Ms. Kris Janson and Sinulog Foundation's Mr. Ricky Ballesteros.

The night was full of young talents as young designers from Cebu showcased their designs to the world thru Ms. Cebu candidates.

Also included in the designers were New York Based Phil-Am Couturier Ms. Josephine Perrotta who designed the production number clothes for the candidates.

And Congrats to Blinky de Leon for winning Ms. Lee 2010. She is my bet for this year's pageant! Good Luck Blinky! See you at the Waterfront Ballroom on January 12, 2010 for the coronation night!

It now has been 2 years since we adopted our first rural educational institution; Lunas Elementary School. Saving their school from closing due to lack of students enrolling because of poverty (parents would prefer their kids to sell candles on churches to put food on the table), my friends and I had decided to continue helping Lunas; putting up a mini library, painting their walls and setting up a media station on one of the rooms in the school are a few projects we have already done for Lunas. 2009 had been a good year for iLearners, now with 4 schools( Lunas Elementary School, Lunas Day Care, Kaluangan Elementary School and Saksak Day Care) adopted and more than 200 adopted students in the rural baranggays of Cebu, we have now reached out to more of our fellow Cebuanos who had been deprived of their chance for a brighter future.

iLearners Inc. on it's 2nd year had a blast at Jollibee Ayala celebrating its birthday inauguration with fellow iLearners! Played games and danced with Jollibee and Hetty! LOL. iLearners Inc is where helping is fun!

iLearners' Brighter Future for Kaluangan

It was sunny Sunday as my friends and I assemble at Starbucks Ayala. Waiting for other members to arrive, I had time to know new iLearn volunteers over a Grande Toffee Nut Frap. With barely an hour sleep packing school supplies with Greg and Shake, I drove up to Transcentral Highway to the Municipality of Asturias. It was November 15, 2009, we turned off the AC and opened the windows and felt the fresh mountain breeze with our hands. There were less cars on the road, thanks to Pacquiao and Cotto Match!

After a 90minute drive, we finally arrived at Asturias! The dump truck we borrowed from Aturias Vice Mayor Joel Dumdum was waiting for us there to transport 100 grocery packs and school supplies to Kaluangan.

iLearners' mission to eliminate rural illiteracy may be impossible but if all of us would try and help, at least there's progress. Instead of ranting about our nation's problems, why don't we do something about it?

iLearners officers and board of trustees would like to thank all the volunteers and sponsors who continuously supports the group's cause! And "Brighter Future for Kaluangan" was a result of the prize we won at ABS CBN's Kapamilya Winner Ka Gameshow wherein we raised 30,000php for iLearners' Cause! Thank you so much to ABS CBN! Inline with that, we handed a Certificate of Appreciation to Dra. Christine Fernandez, one of the hosts of the gameshow. Grocery packs were donations by our members and volunteers.

For me, 2010 Starbucks planner is better than this year's planner. Though the writing pages of the 2010 planner is vertical and does not have horizontal lines as guide when you write, design wise, it's way better than the ordinary cover of this year's(2009) planner.

Brighter Future for Kaluangan

iLearners hope to eliminate rural illiteracy is a great challenge! This November 15, 2009, iLearners would be giving out school supplies to 100 students of Kaluangan Elementary School in Asturias Cebu for iLearners Program "Brighter Future for Kaluangan". Notebooks, papers, pencils, crayons and other school necessities will be given to each student to aid them in their learning process.

One of our goals set for Kaluangan Elementary School is to build a mini Reference Library like we had build for our fist adopted School Lunas Elementary School. We will be needing encyclopedia sets, elementary reference books, Visual Aids and learning flash cards.

We are also raising funds for our Blackboard Drive and 100 Grocery packs for "Kaluangan Crhistmas Joys" which would also happen on the same day, November 15, 2009.

Libera:Angel Voices Live in Cebu

Libera is a group of young and talented boys aged 7-16 years old. At their young age, they have garnered millions of fans around the world touring USA, Japan, South Korea and The Philippines. They also performed at a Papal MAss at the climax of Pope Benedict XVI's first visit to the USA infront of 60,000 people at the New York Yankee Stadium.

These young guys, which came from different schools and different backgrounds, had already appeared on television shows several times and whose music topped mainstream and classical charts and packed concert halls appearing in their flowing white robes.

Libera who had a concert last October 28, 2009 at the Waterfront Hotel Ballroom in Lahug had a fantastic standing ovation after their Finale performance of "Bayan Ko!"

A Photo Exhibit, organized by Cane Events, that features ACRE International and JPNY Couture Dark Creations worn by ABS CBN Stars and models are photographed by Cebu's most celebrated photography club CDP or Cebu Digital Photographers. Excellent Make up by Jessie Glova and his students.

"Satine Eclipse: Dark Fantasy" photo exhibit will run from October 24-31, 2009 featuring photographs of 9 talented members of CDP, Paul Gotiong, Johan Sisno, Neil Dy, Anne Lorainne Uy, Anchela Yap, Jade Saducas, Paul Banday, Gabe Hortelano and Lemuel Reyes.

Each of the photographers had been assigned 1 model to shoot and photographed the models in their assigned characters. Kat Ros of ABS CBN's KWK is Warrior Goddess and was photographed by Johan Sisno.

ABS CBN's Star Patroler Kara Mae Noveda modeled Alice in Wonderland and captured by Paul Gotiong. Fretzie Bercede was photographed by Gabe Hortelano as Queen of Hearts.

Joseph Teves photographed by Jade Saducas played Dark Mousy. Cara Cagulada modeled female Dante of Devil May Cry was phtographed by Anchela Yap.
